April, 2011
In April I traveled to Saratoga Springs for the 2011 New York Press
Association annual convention. While there I was awarded my second New
York Press Association Award, this one for a feature I wrote for
Business
First
newspaper on convicted triple murderer Jerry Balone and his efforts to
turn his life around since being paroled after serving 37 years in prison. I
previously won a NYPA Award in 2007 for my editorial column Just a Thought.

I was elected to a four-year-term as a trustee in the Village of Blasdell, NY.
Running on a platform of continuing to improve the quality of life for village
residents through improved street scape and the encouragement of new
businesses to locate in the village, I am excited about the challenges and
opportunities of holding my first elected political office. I will be sworn in April
4 and I plan to keep a journal throughout my term and compile the
experiences into part of a book project down the road.

I had the chance to fulfill one of my "bucket
list" interviews this week. Those who know
me personally know that I LOVE Olivia
Newton-John. Well, in advance of her
concert at the Turning Stone Casino and
Resort in Verona, I has the chance to
interview her. In addition to winning
multiple Grammy Awards and selling more
than 100 million albums, Olivia starred in the most successful musical of all
time,
Grease. It was a thrill to interview her on the phone and an even bigger
thrill to have the opportunity to go back stage after her show and meet her
when she came to New York. The profile will appear on portfolio.com.
